Symptom

Heavy, Aching, Tired Legs

Legs that feel heavy, tired, or achy, worse the longer you stand and better when you walk or put your feet up, are one of the most recognizable signs of a vein problem. It is often the earliest symptom of venous reflux, before any veins are even visible.

Understanding Heavy, Aching, Tired Legs

When the one-way valves in the leg veins weaken, blood pools in the lower legs instead of returning efficiently to the heart. That extra pressure is felt as heaviness, aching, throbbing, and fatigue, typically building through the day and easing with elevation or a night's rest.

Because the veins causing it can be deep and invisible, many people are told their legs are simply tired or that nothing is wrong. A duplex ultrasound settles the question by mapping the flow in the leg veins. When reflux is found, closing the failing vein commonly lifts the heaviness. When the cause is not venous, we help point you toward the right evaluation.

Symptoms

What it can feel like

  • Heaviness, aching, or throbbing that worsens through the day.
  • Relief with walking, elevating the legs, or compression stockings.
  • Tired, restless legs by evening.
  • Often paired with swelling, visible veins, or night cramps.

Causes

What drives it

  • Venous reflux and chronic venous insufficiency (the most common vein cause).
  • Prolonged standing or sitting; pregnancy; family history.
  • Non-vein causes such as arterial disease, arthritis, or lymphedema.
  • Excess weight, which adds load to the leg veins.

When to seek care

Leg heaviness or aching that limits your day, keeps returning, or comes with swelling, skin changes, or visible varicose veins is worth a vein evaluation. Leg pain that comes on with walking and eases with rest can indicate arterial disease instead and should be assessed.

Heaviness that builds through the day and eases when you elevate your legs is the hallmark of venous reflux: weak vein valves let blood pool in the lower legs, and the pressure is felt as aching and fatigue. A vein evaluation can confirm whether that is the cause.

Yes. The vein driving the symptoms is often deep and invisible from the surface. Heaviness and aching are frequently the earliest signs of reflux, before any bulging veins appear, which is why a duplex ultrasound is the way to know.

When venous reflux is the cause, closing the failing vein commonly reduces the heaviness, aching, and swelling. Individual results vary, and if the cause turns out not to be venous, we help direct you to the appropriate care.
