Wegovy tablets
Wegovy tablets are oral semaglutide 25 mg, FDA-approved in December 2025 for chronic weight management. It is the same molecule as the Wegovy injection, in a daily pill. The catch is the dosing rule: it has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, then nothing for 30 minutes. If you can build that into your morning, it works. If you cannot, it will not.

What Wegovy tablets is approved for
FDA-approved (December 22, 2025) to reduce excess body weight and maintain that reduction long term in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, and to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease. Used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity. Not for use with another GLP-1 medication.

How it works
The same molecule, swallowed
Semaglutide is a peptide and would normally be destroyed by digestion. The tablet pairs it with an absorption enhancer so a fraction gets through the stomach lining, which is why the empty-stomach rule exists.
How it's taken
Daily, first thing
One tablet on waking, on an empty stomach, with no more than four ounces of plain water. Then nothing to eat or drink, and no other pills, for at least 30 minutes. Titrated from 1.5 mg up to 25 mg.
Who qualifies
BMI 30+, or 27+ with a condition
Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition. It also carries a cardiovascular risk-reduction indication for adults with established heart disease.
Expected results
About 14% body-weight loss, on average.
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults with obesity or overweight lost on average about 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks on oral semaglutide 25 mg, counting everyone who started. Among those who stayed on treatment the figure was closer to 17%. Roughly three quarters lost at least 5%, and about one in three lost 20% or more. That puts the pill in the same territory as the Wegovy injection, which is the interesting part: unlike orforglipron, this is not a convenience-for-efficacy trade.

In real life Trial averages assume you reach a full dose and stay on it. Most people don’t: in a 7,881-patient study, real-world weight loss at one year averaged 8.7% overall — about 3.6% for people who stopped within three months, against 11.9% for those who stayed on treatment, with more than 80% never reaching a full maintenance dose. What this is, and how it differs from the injection
Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the identical active molecule in the Wegovy injection. The difference is entirely in delivery. Because semaglutide is a peptide, an oral version needs an absorption enhancer and a much larger dose to get a usable amount into the bloodstream: 25 mg daily by mouth against 2.4 mg weekly by injection. Almost all of the swallowed dose never reaches your circulation.
That absorption chemistry is also the source of the inconvenience. Food, other liquids and other medications all interfere with it, which is why the label requires an empty stomach, a maximum of four ounces of plain water, and a 30-minute wait afterward. This is not fussiness for its own sake; break the rule regularly and you are taking a less effective medication without knowing it.
Wegovy tablets or Foundayo, if you want a pill
There are now two GLP-1 pills approved for weight loss, and they are not interchangeable. Oral semaglutide averaged about 13.6% weight loss over 64 weeks; orforglipron averaged about 11.1% over 72 weeks. Neither has been tested head-to-head against the other for weight loss, so treat that gap as suggestive, not settled.
The practical split is straightforward. Oral semaglutide gives you more weight loss and a cardiovascular indication, but demands a disciplined empty-stomach morning routine. Orforglipron gives you a tablet you can take with lunch and forget about, for somewhat less average weight loss. Which matters more depends on your life, not on which drug is newer.
Dosing overview
You begin at 1.5 mg once daily and step up over about four months through intermediate strengths to the 25 mg maintenance dose, holding each step long enough for your gastrointestinal tract to adjust. As with every GLP-1, rushing the titration is the most common reason patients quit.
Do not confuse this with Rybelsus, which is also oral semaglutide but comes in 7 and 14 mg strengths and is approved for type 2 diabetes rather than weight management. The empty-stomach rule is the same; the dose and the indication are not.

Side effects & safety
What to expect, and how we manage it.
Most side effects are gastrointestinal and mildest at the starting dose. We titrate slowly, coach smaller protein-forward meals and hydration, and adjust if needed. That is the advantage of physician supervision.
- Most common Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and reflux, usually mildest at the starting dose and easing as your body adjusts.
- Management Titrate slowly, keep meals smaller and protein-forward, stay hydrated, and hold a dose step longer rather than pushing through significant nausea.
- Absorption trap Taking it with food, with more than four ounces of water, or alongside other morning medications reduces how much drug you absorb. If results stall, this is the first thing we check, before changing the dose.
- Rare but serious Pancreatitis and gallbladder disease are rare but serious. Stop and call us for severe, persistent abdominal pain.
- Boxed warning Boxed warning: in rodent studies, GLP-1 medicines in this class caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether this applies to humans. These medications are contraindicated if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2).
- Before surgery or sedation Tell your surgeon and anesthesiologist you take this medication before any procedure that requires sedation. GLP-1 medicines slow stomach emptying, so your fasting instructions may need to change to lower the risk of aspiration.
- Not for A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, pregnancy, use alongside another GLP-1, or a prior serious reaction to semaglutide.

These are separate trials with different populations, so the comparison is indirect. The practical difference is the dosing routine, not the result. Individual results vary.

The label requires an empty stomach, no more than four ounces of plain water, and at least 30 minutes before anything else. Skipping the rule quietly reduces how well the medication works.
Same molecule, different product. Rybelsus is oral semaglutide 7 or 14 mg, approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy tablets are oral semaglutide 25 mg, approved for weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction. Using Rybelsus for weight loss would be off-label.
It depends on which inconvenience you will actually tolerate. The injection is once weekly with no food restrictions. The pill is daily and demands a protected 30-minute window every morning. Patients who dislike needles do better on the pill; patients with chaotic mornings do better on the injection. Dr. Eduardo will make a recommendation rather than leaving the choice to a brochure.
