Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a long-established weight loss procedure in which the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the small intestine to connect to it. Food bypasses most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It is the long-standing gold standard for durable weight loss and is especially effective for type 2 diabetes and severe acid reflux.
How it's performed
Dr. Eduardo performs the bypass laparoscopically or with da Vinci robotic assistance. A small pouch is created from the top of the stomach and connected directly to a lower segment of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the duodenum. Most operations take about 2–3 hours.
How it causes weight loss
The small pouch restricts intake while the intestinal rerouting reduces absorption and changes gut hormones that regulate hunger and blood sugar, a powerful combination for weight loss and metabolic disease.
Who qualifies?
Candidates generally have a BMI of 40 or higher, or 35 or higher with an obesity-related condition. Bypass is often recommended for patients with significant acid reflux or type 2 diabetes. Check full candidacy →
Expected results
Published data shows roughly 70–80% excess weight loss over 18–24 months, with high rates of type 2 diabetes improvement. Individual results vary.
Risks & considerations
Risks include bleeding, infection, blood clots, anastomotic leak, bowel obstruction, ulcers, dumping syndrome, and lifelong risk of vitamin/mineral deficiency requiring supplementation. Serious complications occur in a small minority at experienced centers.
Recovery
Most patients go home the day after surgery and return to desk work within 1–2 weeks. You'll follow a staged diet and commit to lifelong vitamins. See the recovery overview →
Why bypass, why here
The procedure of choice for reflux & diabetes
Bypass is the bariatric procedure Dr. Eduardo most often recommends when a patient has significant acid reflux or hard-to-control type 2 diabetes; it usually resolves reflux and has the strongest metabolic effect. As a foregut surgeon, he can also repair a hiatal hernia in the same operation. Fellowship-trained, FASMBS, robotic-assisted, close to home.

Gastric bypass works two ways: a small stomach pouch limits how much you can eat, and rerouting the small intestine reduces calorie and nutrient absorption while changing gut hormones that govern hunger and blood sugar. This dual mechanism produces strong, durable weight loss and powerful metabolic effects. Individual results vary.
Published data shows roughly 70–80% of excess body weight lost, typically over 18–24 months, with high rates of type 2 diabetes improvement. Long-term success depends on follow-up and lifestyle. Individual results vary.
Often, yes. Gastric bypass has strong published rates of type 2 diabetes remission and is the preferred bariatric procedure for patients with significant acid reflux, which it usually resolves. The sleeve is simpler but can worsen reflux in some patients. Dr. Eduardo weighs these factors for your specific case.
Risks include bleeding, infection, blood clots, anastomotic leak, bowel obstruction, ulcers, and (long term) vitamin and mineral deficiencies requiring lifelong supplementation. Some patients experience dumping syndrome after sugary meals. Serious complications occur in a small minority at experienced centers.
Gastric bypass is considered technically reversible in rare circumstances, but it is intended to be permanent and reversal is uncommon and complex. It can be revised when medically necessary. Dr. Eduardo will discuss the durability and permanence of your specific plan.
